Growing Information

Growing Luna Red Hybrid Hibiscus

‘Luna Red’ is a hybrid hibiscus prized for its enormous blooms, rich red coloring, and ability to flower the first year from seed. Vigorous plants become covered with huge, showy flowers in an exceptionally deep red shade, creating dramatic summer color in both garden and container plantings.

Plant ‘Luna Red’ seeds about ¼ inch deep and space plants 24 to 36 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade. Germination typically takes 10 to 21 days. This heat-tolerant variety performs especially well through warm summer conditions.

Ready to bloom in about 120 days, enjoy the flowers as they open and reach their best display stage. Plants can begin flowering roughly 16 weeks from seed under suitable growing conditions.

Bold, dramatic, and heat tolerant, ‘Luna Red’ is an excellent choice for ornamental beds, flowering hedges, large containers, and landscape plantings.

Worth the wait

3/5 seeds germinated, which stinks when you only get five seeds to start with, but at least all three seedlings grew into healthy plants.

I started seeds in early March (zone 4), moved outside in late May, and got first blooms end of July/early Aug. That's closer to 20 weeks than the 16 weeks in the description, so I'd start these much earlier if I do seeds again. I'm very excited to see if these survive the winter.
