Mammoth Russian Sunflower
Growing Mammoth Russian Sunflower
‘Mammoth Russian’ is an heirloom, open-pollinated sunflower prized for its towering height, enormous flower heads, and useful edible seeds. Impressive plants can reach 7 to 10 feet tall, producing huge, disk-shaped flower heads that create a commanding garden display while developing an abundant crop of seeds.
Plant ‘Mammoth Russian’ seeds about 1 inch deep and space plants 18 to 24 inches apart. Sow after the soil reaches about 65 to 70°F, as this variety is very sensitive to frost. Germination typically takes 7 to 10 days. Established plants offer excellent heat and drought tolerance.
Ready to bloom in about 75 days, enjoy the enormous flowers as they open and mature. Allow the heads to continue developing if growing the plants for their useful seed crop.
Tall, productive, and versatile, ‘Mammoth Russian’ is an excellent choice for ornamental plantings, edible seed production, drying, bird gardens, and dramatic back-of-border displays.
