Growing Information

Growing Crimson Clover

‘Crimson’ is an open-pollinated annual clover prized for its winter hardiness, dense ground coverage, and brilliant crimson flowers. Plants form a thick green cover during cool weather before producing a striking blanket of red blooms on 18- to 24-inch plants.

Plant ‘Crimson’ seeds about ¼ to ½ inch deep by broadcasting or spacing plants roughly 2 to 4 inches apart. Germination typically takes 7 to 14 days. Sow approximately ½ pound per 500 square feet. This cold-tolerant crop is commonly planted in September or October.

Reaching maturity in about 90 days under suitable conditions, plants can be managed as a cover crop before or during flowering. Because the plants do not produce runners, they are relatively easy to incorporate by tilling.

Hardy, colorful, and useful, ‘Crimson’ is an excellent choice for cover cropping, forage, soil improvement, and seasonal ground cover.
