Buckwheat
Growing Buckwheat
Buckwheat is a fast-growing cover crop prized for its ability to establish quickly, suppress weeds, and improve garden soil. Plants perform in a wide range of soils with relatively low fertility and help accumulate insoluble phosphorus that can be returned to the soil when the crop is incorporated.
Sow Buckwheat directly about 1 inch deep and space plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Grow in full sun. This heat-tolerant crop can be sown from May through July and begins flowering approximately 5 to 6 weeks after planting.
Reaching maturity in about 80 days, Buckwheat can be cut and incorporated into the soil as a green manure crop before mature seed is produced.
Fast growing, adaptable, and soil building, Buckwheat is an excellent choice for cover cropping, weed suppression, green manure, and beneficial-insect plantings.
