Growing Information

Growing San Marzano Italian Paste Tomato

‘San Marzano Italian’ is a classic paste tomato prized for its rich flavor, dense flesh, and exceptional cooking quality. Bright red, elongated fruits contain few seeds and extra-high solids, allowing them to cook down into thick, flavorful sauces.

Start ‘San Marzano Italian’ indoors for transplanting. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep, space plants 24 to 36 inches apart, and grow in full sun. This heat-tolerant variety thrives during warm summer conditions.

Ready to harvest in about 80 days, pick fruits once they reach full size and bright red maturity.

Dense, rich, and meaty, ‘San Marzano Italian’ is excellent for sauces, canning, freezing, roasting, and everyday cooking.

2026 a Better Year

Planted these along with 4 other varieties last year. Was not a good year for anything but cucumbers. Seeds Germinated well and took off in the garden, but drought conditions killed most plants (event with drip irrigation). Seeds this year were excellent (about 95% Germination) plants are bulking up and will be ready for the garden in a few weeks. Looking forward to these and Better Boy, Early Girls making it thru the summer here in Western TN.

Planted San Marzano in 2025

I planted these in summer 2025. They all germinated. Very good tomato for canning and for Gumbo soup. Will be planting in 2026.
