Christmas Pole Lima Bean
Growing Christmas Pole Lima Bean
‘Christmas’ Pole Lima Bean, also known as ‘Large Speckled Lima,’ is a vigorous warm-season variety prized for its heavy yields, large beans, and rich, buttery flavor. The buff-colored seeds are beautifully splashed with maroon and can grow nearly to the size of a quarter, making them as eye-catching as they are flavorful.
Sow ‘Christmas’ Pole Lima Bean directly in the garden about 1 inch deep after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Space plants about 3 inches apart and grow in full sun. Vigorous vines can reach 7 to 9 feet tall and require a trellis, fence, or other sturdy support.
Ready to harvest in about 80 days, pick the 4- to 6-inch pods once the beans inside are plump and well developed for fresh shell beans, or allow the pods to mature further for later use.
Buttery, creamy, and productive, ‘Christmas’ Pole Lima Bean is excellent for fresh cooking, canning, and freezing.
