Pinto Pole Bean
Growing Pinto Pole Bean
‘Pinto’ is a classic dry bean prized for its rich flavor, creamy texture, and longtime use in Mexican and Southwestern cooking. The light buff-colored beans are beautifully speckled with reddish-brown mottling, with each pod typically holding 5 to 6 beans. Plants grow in a short half-runner habit, with most pods held near the top for easier harvesting, and they can also be grown with support like a pole bean.
Sow ‘Pinto’ directly in the garden about 1 inch deep after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Space plants about 2 inches apart and grow in full sun. Plants typically reach 18 to 24 inches tall and may benefit from light support if allowed to vine.
Ready to harvest in about 85 days, allow the 4- to 6-inch pods to mature fully and dry on the plants before shelling for dry bean use.
Rich, hearty, and versatile, ‘Pinto’ is especially well suited for refried beans, tacos, chili, soups, stews, and drying for storage.
