Growing Information

Growing Pencil Pod Black Wax Bush Bean

‘Pencil Pod Black Wax’ is a dependable yellow-podded bush bean prized for its long, straight pods, tender texture, and excellent flavor. Bright yellow beans are round, stringless, and pleasantly crisp when harvested young, while good disease resistance adds to the variety’s reliable garden performance.

Sow ‘Pencil Pod Black Wax’ directly in the garden about 1 inch deep after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Space plants about 2 inches apart and grow in full sun. Plants typically reach 12 to 18 inches tall and grow in a compact bush habit, so no trellising is required.

Ready to harvest in about 53 days, begin picking the 5- to 7-inch pods while they are still young, smooth, and tender. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production and maintain the best texture and flavor.

Crisp, tender, and versatile, ‘Pencil Pod Black Wax’ is excellent for fresh eating, cooking, canning, and freezing.

Good taste; Color makes picking easy.

I have grown these for several years in my Zone 5a garden as a supplement to my maincrop pole beans. I like them, but will be cutting back on bush beans because bending to pick is getting too hard.
