Kentucky Wonder Heirloom Pole Bean
Growing Kentucky Wonder Heirloom Pole Bean
‘Kentucky Wonder,’ also known as ‘Old Homestead,’ is a vigorous heirloom pole bean prized for its classic flavor, meaty texture, and long harvest season. Productive vines yield generous crops of 9- to 10-inch green pods that are nearly stringless when harvested young, making this variety a longtime favorite for fresh garden beans.
Sow ‘Kentucky Wonder’ directly in the garden about 1 inch deep after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Space plants 6 to 8 inches apart and grow in full sun. Vines typically reach 6 to 8 feet tall, so provide a trellis, fence, teepee, or other sturdy support. This heat-tolerant variety is also well suited to smaller gardens where vertical growing helps save space.
Ready to harvest in about 64 days, begin picking the pods while they are young, crisp, and tender. Pick regularly for snap beans, allow the pods to mature further for fresh shell beans, or leave them on the vines until fully dry for use as dried beans.
Meaty, flavorful, and versatile, ‘Kentucky Wonder’ is excellent for fresh eating, steaming, sautéing, cooking, canning, freezing, and drying.
