Growing Information

Growing El Gordo Hybrid Cantaloupe

‘El Gordo’ is a hybrid cantaloupe prized for its enormous fruit size and sugary-sweet flavor. Huge, ribbed, oval melons can reach up to 30 pounds, with abundant sweet flesh surrounding a relatively small seed cavity.

Start ‘El Gordo’ indoors for transplanting or sow directly where conditions allow. Plant seeds about ½ inch deep and space plants 4 to 5 feet apart. Grow in full sun. This variety is also noted for good disease resistance.

Ready to harvest in about 80 days, begin checking fruits once they reach full size and develop their mature color, aroma, and sweetness.

Sweet, impressive, and juicy, ‘El Gordo’ is excellent for fresh eating, fruit platters, large gatherings, and summer desserts.

El Gordo Melon Has been known to reach 30 pounds.

But it is a hugh cantalope This one every gardener should try but it needs a lot of space. Vines can reach 15 foot in every direction and have 5 to 10 melons per vine. Can't say enough about this one.
