Chiltepin Hot Pepper
Growing Chiltepin Hot Pepper
‘Chiltepin,’ also known as 'Birdseye,' is an open-pollinated pepper prized for its tiny fruits and surprisingly intense heat. Compact plants produce an abundance of pea-sized, round peppers that mature to bright red and pack far more fire than their size suggests.
Start ‘Chiltepin’ indoors for transplanting. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep and space plants 24 to 36 inches apart. Grow in full sun. Its compact habit makes this variety especially well suited to smaller gardens.
Ready to harvest in about 90 days, pick the tiny fruits once they reach their mature size and bright red color.
Tiny, fiery, and flavorful, ‘Chiltepin’ is excellent for sauces, drying, seasoning, and adding concentrated heat to spicy dishes.
