Burgundy Okra
Growing Burgundy Okra
‘Burgundy’ is an award-winning open-pollinated okra and 1988 All-America Selections Winner prized for its dramatic red-maroon coloring, tender pods, and excellent flavor. Tall plants feature deep red stems and veins and produce narrow, spineless pods that remain tender along their length.
Start ‘Burgundy’ indoors for transplanting or sow directly where conditions allow. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep and space plants about 12 inches apart. Grow in full sun. This heat- and drought-tolerant variety thrives through warm summer conditions.
Ready to harvest in about 50 days, pick pods regularly while they are tender and at the size you prefer to encourage continued production.
Tender, colorful, and flavorful, ‘Burgundy’ is excellent for fresh eating, pickling, frying, soups, gumbo, and everyday cooking.
