Growing Information

Growing Big Red Bell Pepper

‘Big Red’ is a sweet bell pepper prized for its large size, thick walls, and crisp, satisfying texture and one of our 2026 Free Seed varieties. Blocky fruits develop three to four lobes and average about 3 to 5 inches across, weighing roughly 5 to 6 ounces. Peppers begin green and mature to a vibrant deep red, developing their fullest sweetness as they ripen.

Start ‘Big Red’ indoors for transplanting or sow directly where conditions allow. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep, space plants 12 to 18 inches apart, and grow in full sun. Sturdy plants reach approximately 20 to 24 inches tall and produce heavy, dependable yields throughout the season.

Ready to harvest in about 75 days, pick peppers green for an earlier harvest or allow them to mature fully red for their sweetest flavor and richest color.

Sweet, crisp, and versatile, ‘Big Red’ is excellent for stuffing, slicing, grilling, fresh eating, salads, and everyday cooking.

Big Red

Received as sample pack with 5 seeds. However, a nice surprise with 6 seeds in the packet. All 6 seeds germinated and plants look great! Anxious to plant outside.

Big Red

Germination was 4 out of 5, not bad. Plants look amazing and can't wait to get them in the ground and start our journey.

Germination

I, too, received a free pkg of Big Red Pepper Seeds with 5 in the pkg. Only one germinated, and as it's growing it looks more like a tomato to me. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

Poor Germination

I received these as part of my free seeds. There were 5 seeds in the packet. Only two of the 5 germinated.
