Growing Information

Growing Ashley Cucumber

‘Ashley’ is an improved Straight Eight-type cucumber prized for its crisp texture, dependable production, and strong performance in hot, humid conditions. Slim, tapered fruits develop a rich dark green color with refreshing flavor and excellent slicing quality. Strong disease resistance makes this variety especially well suited to gardens in the Southeast and other warm, humid regions.

Start ‘Ashley’ indoors or sow directly in the garden about ½ inch deep. Space plants about 12 inches apart and grow in full sun. Plants typically reach 8 to 12 inches tall with spreading vines and perform especially well in warm growing conditions.

Ready to harvest in about 64 days, begin picking the 7- to 8-inch fruits while they are still firm, crisp, and tender. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production and maintain the best texture and flavor.

Crisp, refreshing, and flavorful, ‘Ashley’ is excellent for fresh slicing, salads, sandwiches, and everyday kitchen use.

I bought and have Spacemaster 80 & Ashley in the same bed and I'm not sure which is which anymore but they're both great tasting, not seedy, even when I pick them too late. The plants were resilient to several heat waves and don't show any signs of slowing down when other varieties in other years would have been dying back by now. The vines have had multiple instances of five cucumbers that look like hands when they're small and they're ready within a week. Most vines are in the 4-5 foot length range. I've probably picked an average of 7 per plant in the last week and lots of "fingers" on the vines.
