Growing Kossak Hybrid Kohlrabi

‘Kossak’ is a hybrid kohlrabi variety. Gigantic bulbs that never lose their sweet, tender flavor! Light green skin with sweet white flesh, and no pithy taste. Enjoy them raw or cooked in casseroles. Stores for up to 4 months.

Sow ‘Kossak’ directly in the garden. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep, space plants 4 - 6 inches apart, and grow in full sun. It is cold tolerant and well suited to containers.

Around 65 days to maturity, harvest ‘Kossak’ once the crop reaches the mature stage described for the variety.

Kossak’ is especially well suited for fresh eating, everyday cooking, and storage.

Kossak Seeds

I was disappointed this year with the germination of the seeds. They did not come well for me. I reordered seeds to plant again and the same thing happened. Not sure what happened.

Great Kohlrabi

I have planted this variety for years and have never been disappointed. While some are picked on the smaller size, towards the end of the year they get pretty big. Nonetheless, they remain tender at either end of the spectrum.

Held a LOOONG time

I sowed seeds for these in January 2022 and planted them out in a place that was too shady. I saw them grow slowly and finally start to bulb up when sunlight reached their spot in the mornings and evenings. Then life went sideways and they were ignored until they were a year old! Now they are football shaped with a little tuft of leaves at the top. I picked one and tried it, expecting it to be bitter, woody, maybe even hollow, and inedible. But it is not! It is not super sweet but it is not bitter at all either! We sliced it thin and ate it up with hummus. If it is this good with such long neglect, I can't wait to see what they taste like when planted in a better spot and picked on time! I'm in a Mediterranean-type Zone 9.

The itty bitty seeds develop into huge plants. But, don't let the large size fool you, these are the sweetest kohlrabi I have ever eaten. Goes great in a mixed greens salad with your favorite dressing. I have yet to try some cooked, but I have faith that they will still taste great. They are also fast growers and I can get two crops in a year here in Tennessee.
