Congo Heirloom Watermelon
Growing Congo Heirloom Watermelon
‘Congo’ is an award-winning heirloom watermelon and 1950 All-America Selections Winner prized for its impressive size and high sugar content. Large oblong fruits develop medium-green rinds with dark striping and beautiful medium-red flesh.
Sow ‘Congo’ directly in the garden about ½ inch deep, space plants 18 to 36 inches apart, and grow in full sun. For best sowing, orient each seed with the pointed end facing down. This heat-tolerant variety thrives during warm summer conditions. When sowing, place the pointed end of the seed down.
Ready to harvest in about 95 days, pick fruits once they have reached full maturity and developed their characteristic color and sweetness.
Large, juicy, and extra sweet, ‘Congo’ is excellent for fresh eating.
