2017 AAS Winner. The first early Aji pepper! Aji means ‘chili’ to South Americans and is unbeatable to balance a refreshing citrus flavor with a warm heat level. Most ajis mature too late to be feasible for many home gardeners, but not this new champion, our first pepper ever in the Capsicum baccatum family! Narrow, conical fruits are crisp and thin-walled, with a warm heat level and subtle citrus undertones. Perfect for fresh eating, when cooked or dried into a tasty paprika.

Be careful - can be hotter than expected!

I grew these (seeds purchased Feb 2024) and was surprised by the heat level. They were much hotter than a hot jalapeno and the 1000-5000 SHU rating in the description.

The best pepper plant

This is my second year growing Aji Rico's and they are an absolute favorite in our home. We like just a small amount of spice and these are absolutely perfect. The plant is incredibly durable as well. I planted them in the ground last year and they thrived. I have them in pots this year and they are thriving. You can eat them when they are green or red and they grow incredibly fast. I use them in salsa's, pizza, sauté them to put on burgers, put in salads and so many other ways.

These plants did well. I was growing to supplement my jalapenos and try something new. These fruited much earlier than my jalapenos and gave tons of peppers from summer through frost. No problems at all. They were definitely not as hot as my jalapenos, but I used for sweet, hot pepper relish and canned for pickled peppers for nachos. Pickled they seemed just like those canned diced green chile peppers from the store. I did need to stake them and they definitely sprawled. Highly recommend.
