Hairy Vetch
Growing Hairy Vetch
Hairy Vetch is an open-pollinated annual cover crop prized for its ability to fix nitrogen and improve challenging soils. Vigorous plants perform especially well in poor, dry, sandy, or acidic soils where some clovers struggle, eventually reaching about 3 to 4 feet tall.
Plant Hairy Vetch seeds about ½ to 1 inch deep by broadcasting or spacing plants roughly 2 to 4 inches apart. Germination typically takes 7 to 14 days. Sow approximately ½ pound per 500 square feet. This cold-tolerant crop can be planted in fall, winter, or spring.
Reaching maturity in about 90 days under suitable conditions, cut plants as flowering begins and turn the growth into the soil for use as green manure.
Hardy, vigorous, and soil building, Hairy Vetch is an excellent choice for cover cropping, nitrogen fixation, green manure, and forage.
